The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast, Inc.
is an independent not-for-profit organization formed for the express purpose of ensuring a permanent home for The Perlman Music Program Winter Residency in Sarasota, Florida held for two weeks each December.
The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast works closely with internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor,
Itzhak Perlman
and his wife and founder of PMP,
Toby Perlman
, to provide a uniquely intensive two-week residency for approximately 35 exceptionally talented young musicians (ages 12-20+) participating in the internationally renowned The Perlman Music Program.
Sarasota Winter Residency (8th Annual: December 26, 2011-January 7, 2012)
PMP has a campus setting for daily student activities thanks to a partnership with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee
More than 13,000 community members and visitors attend 20 free events including orchestra and chorus rehearsals, master classes, and student recitals
The culmination of the Winter Residency is the Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House, on Saturday, January 7, 2012
Participating students represent countries as diverse as the United States, Armenia, Bulgaria, Israel, Romania, Russia, Sweden, and Taiwan, among others
The PMP Sarasota Winter Residency is one of only two residencies presented in the United States
PMP/S Education Outreach Program (3-week in-school residency: October/January/May)
For a second season, PMP/S offers a curriculum-based program to serve local schools of Sarasota and Manatee Counties during the academic year. PMP alumni return as teaching artists, performing interactive concerts for 5th and 6th graders and providing hands-on training to middle and high school orchestra classes. This program has expanded to offer free public performances as part of The Performance Series.
The PMP/S Education Outreach Program:
Serves 16 schools, reaching more than 4,000 local students
Supports recruitment into string programs and fosters improved playing skills in the classroom
Inspires collaborations with Sarasota and Manatee County school boards, music educators, the Sarasota Youth Orchestra,
Grew out of collaborations with The Perlman Music Program, The Juilliard School and Columbia University Teachers College
